It's January and time for the annual detox after a massively over-indulgent Christmas and New Years. This January I have decided to do the Whole30 diet, and here is a little bit about why....
...Way way back a couple of years ago I was a final year uni student, coming to the end of my four year degree in Fashion and Textiles. I was incredibly stressed and tired, working 15 hour days, 6/7 days a week.
My diet took the brunt of the hit in an attempt to stay focused and functioning, and my eating habits became erratic and I relied heavily on all sorts of energy drinks. As a result of this I ended up with kidney stone. Painful but quite easily fixed.
Unfortunately the long term damage didn't become apparent until just under a year later when I was diagnosed with diverticulitis. Damage and swelling in my large intestine, as a result I now have to take tablets for the rest of my life, every time it flares up.
This is something I accepted until recently. I picked up one of the diet and weight-loss magazines that become even more common at this time of year. In it I found a really interesting article about a diet called Whole30, that claimed to heal the digestive system and re-set any damage that may have been caused through diet or otherwise, along with re-setting your metabolism.
The diet is an exclusion diet and cuts out entire food groups including dairy and grains of any kind, as well as all pluses and all alcohol!. Claiming to give you a whole new mindset and metabolism in just 30 days.
I decided that anything that could potentially reverse the problems and damage that I had stupidly caused to myself was worth giving a go and I made the decision to start this diet on the 2nd of January.
As I am already gluten intolerant I am used to cutting out certain food groups, however I am not naive enough to think that this diet will be in any way easy. I told my friends and family what I wanted to do and asked if I could have their support for the duration of this process.
I also decided to blog about my experiences regularly as a way of keeping my motivation up and myself on track.
I would love to hear from anyone who is attempting this or any other diet this new year.
Thank you for reading :)
