Why I Bake..

I was chatting away to some of our customers in the cafe this week and quite a few people wanted to know how I got into baking/cooking. It made me think and I decided that it might make a nice little blog post, especially as I am hoping to do way more baking/cooking posts in the future!

When I was little my parents never kept any sweets or crisps or even fizzy drinks in the house, they were usually for special occasions only. So if me or my sister wanted anything sweet we had to bake!

The kitchen was never out of bounds to us, we were never told to stay away because it was unsafe and we were allowed to use anything we could find in the cupboards.

I was given my first kids baking book when I was about 8 and it was brilliant. There were huge step-by-step pictures of how to make each thing and they were graded with how difficult they were. It included everything from fruit salad to fairy cakes and the hardest thing in the book: a full roast chicken dinner!

After making the fairy cakes enough times to have the recipe memorised, I moved on to the Roast dinner! It probably took me the best part of a day to get it all prepped and done but by the time we all sat down to eat it felt like such a special and exciting occasion and I loved it.

From that day I have loved the idea that cooking nice things for people makes them happy and can turn any everyday meal into a special occasion.

I never saw cooking as anything more than something I loved to do in my spare time and that is why I never perused it through collage or University. I fell into it as a job because it is something that I have had a life-long love for and that makes me so so happy! :)

How did you get into cooking or baking?

Thank you for reading :)
