The Day We Caught the Train

Last Tuesday was T's 24th Birthday and to celebrate this year he decided that he wanted to do the Trans-Penine Ale Trail.

I am already a little  bit of an Ale Trail veteran and loved it last time so I was more than happy to give it another go when T suggested it! :)

The Ale Trail has been around for quite a few years now and was originally started to boost the profile and popularity of real ale at the same time as bringing much needed business to the struggling pub industry. The trail became famous when it was featured on Oz Clark and James May's Drink To Britain a few years ago.

You can read all about it, and plan your own trip! Here: http://www.realaletrail.net/

We started our day in Huddersfield, meeting everyone for some much needed food before our day began. We bought our tickets at the station, we decided that we were only going to go as far as Stayley Bridge and then we would work our way back to Huddersfield, missing out the last three (official) pubs at Mirfield, Dewsbury and Batley.

We caught the train to Staley Bridge and then began working our way vie each of the pubs on or near to the platform! In Marsden we might have cheated a bit and skipped the pub nearest the station in favour of The River-head tap witch I defiantly think is one of the best pubs on the route!

As the day went on and the beer (or  cider) continued to flow our time at each stop got longer and longer..we even ended up missing out Mosley all together as the day was ticking by so fast and at the time it seemed like a worthy sacrifice.

Not to be all boring or anything, but It is probably a good idea to have someone keeping an eye on train times and the occasional head count wouldn't go aims either. Although the ale trail is now so popular though that you won't be on your own heading for trains and your bound to make a few friends along the way!

We ended up back in Huddersfield some of us a little worse for wear than others but all still standing,It was a great day and Id defiantly recommend the Ale Trail as an alternative to a day in the pub!

Thank you for reading :)
