Hepworth Feast

Yesterday was tom's actual birthday and so even more celebrating was required! It just so happens that a rather lovely local tradition happened to fall on the same day and that is how Tom decided we should spend the day.

The Hepworth feast is a local tradition that happens every year on the last Monday in June. It started as a memorial for the 13 people of Hepworth that lost their lives during the plague (1665-1666) Thirteen trees were planted in their memory  and these are still standing in the village today.

The feast starts at Hepworth shcool and a banner is carried through the neighbouring villages of Scholes and Jackson bridge followed by a brass band and all the locals and school children. The walk passes three pubs where everyone stops for a break and some 'refreshments' finally ending up back where you started at the lovely local pub the Butchers arms in Hepworth.

We took the day off and spent it following the procession and drinking in the sun. In the evening we sand hymns in the street and watched the local schools compete in races before stuffing our faces full of hog roast and home made curry.

It was a really unique and lovely experience and I loved every minute of it! I'm so happy this how Tom wanted to spend his birthday and that I got to go too! :)
