I reckon I got most of my mid-twenties freak out over and done with when I turned 23 so funnily enough I am not too phased about the idea of turning 25 (on Monday) and being officially in my mid-twenties!
Once upon a time I thought that I would have a lot of boxes ticked by the time I reached 25...marriage, kids... a house...No joke! It was only a couple of years ago now that I realised that my ideas were not so realistic and NO that was not just to do with my single status.Back then I had no concept of the reality of life, particularly for our generation where things like getting onto the property ladder seem like a far flung and distant myth.
For a long time I felt like I was failing because I hadn't ticked off mile-stones on my imaginary time-line. But I eventually realised that putting way to much pressure on yourself in your mid-twenties is really common, I also learned that things are a lot better when you learn to take the pressure off and have faith that there is time for everything including just having fun!
If I could tell my slightly younger self a few things they would probably look a bit like this:
- Despite all of that pressure from your family, films...the media! you are not supposed to have it all figured out yet it's a myth! ...And trust me everyone else doesn't have a clue either!
- Once upon a time you thought this day would never come, but night's out stop being quite as fun, your hangovers get a lot worse! .. and can absolutely last more than one day! ...And keeping your eyes open past 12am gets really really hard!
- Equally. Long and lovely lie-in's will become a thing of the past, I battle to stay asleep past 8:00am! :(..but afternoon napping is often inevitable.
-You genuinely start to enjoy, possibly even preferring a night in to a night out
-You eventually realised that your skin does require some attention and face-wipes aren't always ideal...although still entirely essential.
- You do turn into your mother- (when it comes to cleaning at least) you can no longer ignore dust or piles of clothes without getting stressed out, dirty plates are really disturbing and washing and ironing clothes are the bane of your life :(
- You actually catch yourself thinking: quality in clothes might be much nicer than quantity... (what the hell is happening to me!!!?)
- You are quite happy to give most new foods a try. Onions are delicious, who knew!? ...but your hatred of Mayonnaise will always and forever run too deep!
- Sometimes when someone criticizes you it says more about them than it does about you.
- Your not always going to have the same friends forever, you will lose some along the way...not necessarily for any good reason either...or because of anything you have done. But the ones you stay close to become so much more special.
- Changing your perspective on a situation saves you a whole load of stress/angst/tears and is quite possibly the secret to everlasting happiness!
-You probably will, more than likely get your heart broken...but turns out getting over that becomes one of the best things that will ever happen to you!
- You actually know what I like and dislike and are comfortable enough to admit all of these things!
Yes I am inevitably getting a little bit older but being in my 'mid-twenties' is officially the best I have even felt! ...but if we could possibly stop time now that would be ideal!
Thank you for reading! :)
