Okay so I admit that the blog title for this post might be a tiny bit misleading, it is in fact about the importance of one particular penguin.
This little guy to be precise! He never had a name so i decided to call him Walter..Walt for short! :)
He was my grandma and granddads and they have had him since the 60's! I remember him from when I was very little and they have always had him on display, in pride of place on their bookshelf! He is by no means there biggest or most fancy ornament, but he has always been my favorite.
I have already mentioned that my granddad died in February and this weekend just gone we moved my grandma to a really lovely nursing home not too far from my house. She has dementia and since my granddad went it has been getting much worse. she would call the hose at least 30 times a day....50 on really bad days! and she was forgetting to feed herself or look after herself any more. My dad would drive over to Denton every weekend to help her go shopping and sort the house out, but after one too many 2 AM phone calls we made the decision that she needed to move!
She picked her favorite ornaments and items to take with her and then me my mum and dad went to start sorting through the rest of her things this weekend. She had left Walt behind, so I decided id take him home for safe keeping!
We were worried that she would hate the idea but so far she really loves it. she has people to talk to and is loving the bacon sandwiches for breakfast. It means that we don't have to worry about her as much because we know that people are looking after her and its only 20 minutes away so it saves my dad the long drives to Manchester all the time! :)
Do you have any relatives with Dementia? I'd love to her about your experiences with this horrible disease.
